Times, oh… they are a-changin’.
Not long ago, the only electronic gadget that we spoke about wearing was a watch. They came in all shapes, sizes, and fit just about any bank account. Today, wearable fitness technology and Smartphone functionality is growing exponentially. In fact, today you can find everything from a pedometer to a heart rate monitor built into these “wearables.”
I suppose the point here is, there's no avoiding new technology these days - especially when managing your health. While this technology revolution can seem intimidating to stay on top of the times, the resources put forth by the industry’s most innovative minds can help make managing your health a whole lot easier. So it’s worth taking a deeper dive to see what’s out there.
There are currently 17,000 health care software apps available for your everyday Smartphone. Industry experts have predicted that in the very near future 500 million Smartphone users will be employing some form of a health and wellness app on their phone. These staggering numbers alone leave one to wonder, “Which one (s) should I use to best manage my health?” More importantly, however, “What are the best apps for me?”
At Capital BlueCross, our mission is to become your active partner in achieving a healthier life. We stay on top of the most current advances in technology on your behalf. Whether it be apps to track your walking, eating habits or design the perfect work-out routine; there’s an app for that!
So let’s start with a few of Capital BlueCross’ suggested essentials, all available at Google Play Store or the Apple AppStore.
Capital BlueCross’ Member Mobile
This “home-grown” quintessential Capital BlueCross app allows users to track doctor appointments, locate participating health care providers and assist people in managing their Capital BlueCross health insurance. Capital Blue Cross’ Member Mobile is a feature of Capital BlueCross, but this mobile app is free to everyone to use.
Live Healthy with Capital BlueCross
Practicing healthy habits and getting on the right track to good health can be tough. That’s why the company introduced Live Healthy with Capital BlueCross, the app that helps make wellness more doable.
With Live Healthy, you’re in control. You choose the habits to help accomplish your objectives, while tracking your progress and charting your course to wellness.
Live Healthy is a feature of Capital BlueCross benefits program, but this mobile app is also free to everyone to use.
Here are a few more popular apps that offer great health monitoring benefits.
JawBone Up 24 (pictured at top)
This is a fitness and sleep tracker wristband device with a very slim profile that has wireless sync when it's within range of a Smartphone app via Bluetooth. This app works with a vibration feature that lets you know when you’ve been idle for too long, and has the ability to wakes you up when you’re in “light” sleep instead of a deep, restful sleep.
The JawBone app works with other app's such as RunKeeper, My Fitness Pal and Map My Fitness.
This is another fitness and sleep tracker wristband device. It monitors steps, calories, distance totals, sleep and sleep quality, as well as several other fitness details. An optional heart rate strap is available for more detailed training options.
As with other trackers, the Polar Loop uses Bluetooth to communicate with the Polar Flow Smartphone app.
Armour 39 – by Under Armour
Armour 39 from Under Armour is a heart-rate monitor and fitness evaluation device. It comes with a chest strap that holds a quarter-sized transmitter, which communicates with a free app or separately sold watch. After a baseline fitness assessment through running on a flat surface, the app is ready to measure the intensity and effort of your workouts.
