DermaScan screening highlights sun damage not seen by the naked eye

I am so glad that Capital BlueCross provides DermaScan skin screening sessions at community events, and regularly at the Capital Blue health and wellness retail store in Center Valley, Pa. While growing up, every summer I would get a bad sunburn since I am a fair-skinned freckled-faced Irish girl. Back then parents and kids were not as well educated on the importance of using sunscreen to prevent sun damage.
As a nurse care guide, I feel good every time someone comes into Capital Blue for a DermaScan screening because it gives me the opportunity to educate them on how to protect against getting sun damage and sunburn. I tell everyone to “WEAR SUNSCREEN!!” I never want any child or adult to suffer through a blistering sunburn like I did.
The ultraviolet light in the DermaScan machine shows sun damage that the naked eye cannot see, so customers are surprised when they see the dark spots that are under their skin from sun damage. Seeing that sun damage changes a lot of peoples’ minds about using sunscreen. The scan also shows if your skin is dehydrated or dry so the topic of using a moisturizer and drinking plenty of water is also a conversation I often have with customers.
As a caregiver, I want to help people to make the right decisions about skin care that will help to prevent the sun damage that can lead to cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. It can happen anywhere on the body, but is usually found on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun, like the head, face, neck, hands and arms. Make sure you see your dermatologist as recommended. I just had my yearly check-up the other day!!
Enjoy the sun this summer, but be smart and use your sunscreen. Then, come visit me at the Capital Blue store and show me your beautiful sun protected skin under the DermaScan. I will gladly provide you with educational take home materials regarding sunburn, sunscreen and skin cancer.
