When most of us think of talking about grief with young children we mainly don’t. We don’t think about it. Most of us, as well intentioned grown-ups around children who have experienced a loss, want to protect them from their grief not prepare them for it.
Transforming Health in partnership with Partnership For Better Health convened our community to talk about just these issues at I’m Here With You: A Forum on Children and Grief on June 23, 2014 at the WITF Public Media Center. The Keynote speaker was Marcie Taylor, vice president of the Drew Michael Taylor Foundation. Taylor co-founded the Drew Michael Taylor Foundation in Shippensburg with her husband, Randy, after the death of her three-year-old son, Drew, in a June 2006 auto accident. She also serves as the Drew's Hope Family Services Coordinator for the Drew's Hope grief support program for children, teens and families.
Taylor spoke candidly about her own loss and its effects on her young daughter. She shared common myths about children and grief and a variety of activities and resources to support children. You can watch her presentation here.
A wonderful panel also shared their experiences and work related to the grief of young children. Panelists included: Chris Hoffman, Hoffman-Roth Funeral Home and Crematory, Lisa Liebetrau, Founder and Director of Camp Koala, Terri Bowling, Outreach and Education Coordinator and Child Grief Specialist, Highmark Caring Place and Marcie Taylor. Listen here for a discussion from the panelists related to what a change in culture around grief could mean for families and children.
Thanks to all those who shared their experiences during the forum.
